Earlier this week, I gave a presentation to the Campbell Chamber of Commerce and talked about the importance of a community. I told the audience that I believe in community. I rarely write about my personal life here but I'm writing today because I felt overwhelmed with emotion over the response from my son's school community to the news that one of their own was in the hospital, in need of help.

How Do You Tell A Child His Friend Has Died?

I am not adequately equipped to write about this. But here I go anyway. ... My son's classmate, Eduardo "Edu" Grijalva died Tuesday at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He had just celebrated his seventh birthday last month. I felt that it was important to let the community know, his community, that he lost his battle with acute Leukemia.

COMMENTARY: Rocky roads are a real drag on the pocketbook

Last month, I blew a tire for the first time in my life. I was on Highway 87 on my way to the Animal Planet Expo at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds when I heard a loud thud, looked over at my husband and pulled over. The whole ordeal was less than dramatic, thank goodness, but it did leave me oversensitive to the condition of local roads. Link to Story

Commentary: To start fixing budget, fix California's schools

When California Insurance Commissioner and possible gubernatorial candidate Steve Poizner came to San Jose recently, his focus was on the state's budget problem and how to fix it. Although I've heard many of the steps Poizner outlined in his address to the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce — attract innovative entrepreneurs and keep our businesses in California (Back off, Nevada!)
